In Greek mythology, the Amazons were warrior women known for their bravery, strength, and skills in horseback riding, hunting, and combat. They lived in the city of Themiscyra on the Black Sea. The Amazons formed an exclusively female society, where men were welcomed only for the purpose of reproduction.
Although the concept of the Amazons belongs to mythology, archaeological research has shown that women from the Black Sea tribes were indeed skilled warriors. Even Christopher Columbus, in his travel journals, mentions a solely female settlement that would annually raid neighboring male tribes for procreation.
